For me, the equivalent to phone theft would be walking around London with your watch off your wrist and being wound in front of everyone, so yeah for the majority of people, keep it covered and you'll be OK.
I am in London quite often and never feel worried. But there again, I don't wander around certain areas at 3am and drunk as a skunk.
