Apologies if this has been covered, I did a search and couldn’t come up with anything;

Can someone tell me if there are any/many classic British watch makers? Does anyone own any (watches that is)?

Well there's Smiths for a start


On top of Everest Sherpa Tenzing may have worn a Rolex, but Hillary was wearing a Smiths.

In my somewhat biased opinion Smiths made the finest incarnation of the W10 spec:

and, also in my opinion, the Cal.89 has the nicest tick of any watch.

When Smiths needed government support in the depths of the quartz revolution the government chose to pour all their money into Delaurean (I don't care how it is spelled) to be spent on cocaine instead.

These days, there some bloke called Eddie something or another who apparently knocks some stuff up in his shed from time to time.

For the record at one time Coventry used to have a big watch making industry.

Worse, he actually had a Smiths on one wrist (Smiths provided the watches for the Hillary expedition) and a Rolex from a Swiss Expedition a year or two previously (which got within 200m of the summit before giving up). History doesn't record which he preferred.

I have an old Dent pocket watch, it's a fantastic piece of Heath Robinson over-engineering: the VIncent of the watch world.


However, the bottom line is that no one is making a British movement for a mass market and that has to be the gold standard.
