Caveat emptor - divestraps.com - outstretchedhands

Postby davec on Wed Jan 06, 2010 5:02 am

Several ugly threads on other forums about missed shipments and repeated failure to ship after receipt of funds.

Thought all should be warned but if inappropriate please delete.

A more helpful edit...

There have been a couple of threads about this kind of thing before....

I'm not sure this thread will add anything to the discussion, but thanks for the heads up - I don't mean to denigrate your efforts. :)

I've seen the posts, guys posting for information or advice on the straps, or they've received one of the staps from Duncan  . I'm guilty of being mum, and not stepping in and giving my views, or directing them to any of the old posts on the blow up before concerning the inflated price of his straps, if it's really Kevlar, the suitability of a real Kevlar strap, etc. I always figured let somone else advise them, or didn't feel comfortable 'outing' Duncan and giving a public warning. I feel sort of bad now. :(

I hear you, but in a sense I'm finding it hard to be overly sympathetic now that the divestraps.com reputation had been so thoroughly documented on numerous forums and information outlets. Anyone who cared enough to go looking should well have been able to find the relevant information with ease, on TZ-UK or elsewhere.

I don't mean to re-ignite the flames as I know the community has been trying to put the divestraps kevlar debacle behind and move on, but I think at this point the wider collector community is best served by warning collectors away from divestraps.com altogether.

This thread comes up all the time, in my mind if someone wants to pay £75 for a divestrap rubber strap then i don't see a problem, sure there are cheaper out there, but after owning Panerai watches i know that it's not just divestrap that do this, as i've paid £230 for a Panerai strap that i could get with similar material and quality for £50, it's just down to choice, like everything.

As for the strap itself, i tend to just buy maratac straps, this guy on ebay sells them for less than a tenner posted from the states in a few different widths and colours and the two i've ordered in the last couple of months have both arrived within a week of the auction http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/24mm-HQ-Soft-Rubb ... 4116wt_939

Interesting, I always had a bad feeling about that guy but never had any dealings.

I've bought a few straps from him over the last few months and didn't have an issue. I do have an order outstanding from November, fortunately it's only for one nato strap which I don't think I'll ever see. I must admit I did think about posting a message here but thought it was covered on other boards.

In my opinion, I don't think it hurts for another post to go up, whether the onus is on newcomers to do a search or not, we are a community and if someone is behaving like this then the occasional reminders will hopefully ensure that the person is no longer able to trade.

When i first saw the threads here and on WUS I felt it was a witch hunt. But the more I read on various forums (more then 5) about poor dealings etc, it does make me wonder. It also doesn't help the references to the bible etc he keeps coming up with and then stuff goes wrong :|

I think its one of the strength of the WIS community that we ARE prepared to name and shame in circumstances like these. No one gets away with shafting us for long.
