This is bad, very bad.

I suspect RM will take the stance that the delivery was signed for and they have no indication that it had been tampered with at the time of signature :(

on the one occasion when ive had stuff delviered by rm that was obviously damaged / tampered with in transit, it had been repacked in a clear rm polybag with a little note apologising and noting the damage

I have also thought of that but what can I do ?? do I return all payment and risk not getting anything back, go halves, blame the other person ? a real crappy choice in any case...

I think I'd let the police know too as it could well have been stolen. If they don't do anything, at least you've covered that base.

As for the wife who signed for it, on the basis you wouldn't always know what's coming via signed for delivery, I could see many people doing the same thing. Poor thing.

I hope you get it resolved quickly (hope it turns up undamaged in a sorting office).

Should also remember that ALL post is property of HM the Queen whilst in transit, and may only be opened by the sender (that's why you put your details on the outside), the recipient, or the Queen herself - Her Maj also designates named posts who may open mail in her name due to practicalities, but these people are few and far between, and are usually quite senior in government (i.e. Home Secretary, etc). AFAIK, no post office employees have the power or authority to open mail in transit. Thus this is a serious offence. Speak to plod.

if the outer envelope was badly ripped on delivery then your posty would remember this and may corroborate your claim

I really feel for both you and the buyer here :(

As far as I can see, unfortunately the situation now boils down to your word against the buyer and the buyers word against RM. I would be holding on to the money until I had heard from RM about your claim. If they do as suspected, reply that the package was signed for and they were given no indication that the package had been tampered with at the time of delivery, you have got a real problem.

Although I think that my wife may have done the same thing and signed for the package, if as a result of that signature you are not able to claim on RM insurance, surely the buyer has to bear at least some of the cost.

I sincerely hope you get this resolved one way or another. Maybe RM will surprise and pay out or maybe somehow the watch will turn up.

Good Luck.

Sorry to hear about this...its a real kick in the bollox.

Interesting the comment regards the plastic bag with a damaged parcel inside....i've recieved RMSD before the same way. The package was ripped etc and it was placed in a bag with apologies....you can then check the contents before signing.
The fact that this wasn't in such a bag would seem to narrow down the time when the watch was stolen.
Definitely report it to Plod asap.
Slightly bemused, with an air of ignorance.

I feel for you and stoneyloon. He must be worried sick too. Keep the communication channels open and with a little patience and perseverence I'm sure it will get sorted. Make sure that Adam gets hold of the postie tomorrow to back things up.
The "three watch rule"...tried that!!

Assuming it's not the postie who delivered it who nicked it. I'm very sorry to hear about this, there's not much you can do. If it's any consolation there are a lot of people from this forum now keeping their eyes peeled. Good luck with it all and do report it to the police. It's possible that other stuff has gone missing from the same sorting office or delivery round and the police might already be investigating or it might lead to them starting an investigation.

I successfully claimed for a missing watch in identical circumstances but the success of the claim was down to the fact that the recipient had kept the packaging which had clearly been resealed with different tape.

Put your claim in and don't let them fob you off.
