You are doing it wrong. If you have four yellows in the first, look for a word incorporating a maximum of two of these as a second. You need both info about the fifth letter and placement info about the important ones of the four.

You have to stop guessing and get methodical.

Second line went for it, then became slightly more sensible on line three to try to elimate letters which meant there was only one winner come line four. (I read one or two comments on this thread first which kind of let me know this was one of those with multiple possibles)

I've got a new twist. Wait until late in the day, have a look at the matrices of coloured blocks posted in this thread, and with knowledge of frequently used openers and other clues see if it is possible to reduce the number of attempts or even get it in one. It is possible to work out a lot from Kingstepper's earlier post alone.

Saw a video earlier with 5 words covering 25 of the 26 letters of the alphabet. So basically guaranteed to win on the 6th, but does take the fun away from it.

'Non-hard' is hardly cheating as some have suggested - just a slightly different game. Anyway, tried hard today and got a 5, either way there's as much luck as skill involved IMO.

Not quite, given the possibility to have double letters.

Imagine after five tries you have arrived at the conclusion that your word only features the following three letters: E, S, T

How many possibilities still, given you will have only little information about the placement of the three letters and none about which two of them would feature double (or even triple)?

Alright clever clogs! It worked on the few times I tried it, so clearly needed to think it through a bit more.

    ETA

Playing the archives, just lost and when i saw the word SISSY, went back and did the 5 words.

I have a Y in the correct place, I know there is an S and an I but not where with only one guess left.

    Rubbish video!

There appears to be a few Wordle apps/games, am I correct in thinking that this version allows you to type in any random 5 letters even if they don't form a proper word? Or am I being dumb?

The Android app game I use won't allow improper words to be submitted, not only that but it also looks different to many of the screen shots shown. My GF's Apple app doesn't look like mine and has different words of the day so we also can't compete!

I can only come up with STETS and TESTS, and the position of the E in GLENT would give away which was correct. I don't think there are many five letter words that you couldn't guarantee getting in six using the words with unique letters technique. Dunno about in German.

    SETTS

Anyway, the E, T and S was just a try as these are very common letters. There might be other three letter combinations with more solutions...

I was being very sloppy/lazy with guesses 2 and 3 and found myself in a bad spot after attempt 3, could easily come up with ten words that would have still worked. Then I found a very good word to close out most possibilities (basically building around three consonants that I needed to know before I could proceed). After that, I could only think of one single solution and that proved correct.

For any mathematicians here, in this YouTube video it's deduced that the best opening word is CRANE, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v68zYyaEmEA

Unlike the approach that many advocate of covering as many of the letters as possible in the opening guess(es) we should also consider how many possibilities that will leave.

For example, if we pick EARTH, yes we have covered lot of common letters but there are far more possible answers if some of those letters are correct. Less likely that CRANE will give us some letters but if it does there are far fewer possible solutions.

First word with no correct letters is a very good outcome. Should eliminate a lot of common words already.
